Natural Stone Veneer Sizes, Thickness, Weight and Backing Types

How thin is ultra-thin natural stone? Across the wider NALEXIBLE material range, stone sheets can be approximately 1–3 mm thick, depending on the series. But that number does not describe every finished product. A peel-and-stick piece, a 3D panel and a backlit panel all include additional layers that change their overall thickness and weight.

If you are still deciding which format suits your project, start with our guide to choosing the right natural stone solution. This article looks more closely at the physical specifications behind that choice.

Typical NALEXIBLE formats at a glance

Product format Typical size Approximate overall thickness Approximate weight Backing or structure
Standard ultra-thin natural stone veneer 1220 × 2440 mm or 1220 × 3050 mm 2–3 mm for many currently listed finishes 1.5–2 kg/m² Fibreglass-reinforced backing
Translucent natural stone sheets 1220 × 2440 mm for selected finishes Around 2–3 mm Around 1.5 kg/m² Light-transmitting resin and backing
Peel & Stick natural stone 600 × 150 mm Around 5 mm Around 3 kg per box of 12 pieces Pre-applied adhesive backing
3D Peel & Stick stone 600 × 150 mm Around 4–7 mm Around 0.5–1 kg per piece Adhesive backing with a raised stone surface
LumiSlate backlit stone panels Size depends on panel configuration Around 22 mm for standard configurations Depends on panel size Natural stone, light-diffusing layers, LED components and frame
Exterior stone cladding panels Selected widths from 100–600 mm at 1200 mm length Around 12 mm for the listed format Confirm for the selected panel Natural stone combined with an aluminium backing and fixing system

These are typical product-format figures, not a promise that every stone finish or custom order has identical specifications. Confirm the selected finish and final panel construction before using dimensions or weights in construction drawings.

Why the backing matters

The backing is part of what makes each product suitable for its intended use.

Standard ultra-thin veneer uses a reinforced backing to support a genuine stone surface in a lightweight, flexible sheet. It is supplied as a surface material, so the substrate and adhesive system must be selected for the project. For the installation process, see How to Install Ultra-Thin Natural Stone Veneer.

Translucent stone uses a different backing structure so light can pass through selected stone surfaces. It is supplied as a sheet for a separately designed backlighting system—not as a complete illuminated panel. Our backlit stone installation guide explains how the stone, lighting and supporting materials work together.

Peel & Stick products include adhesive backing for smaller interior applications. The 3D version also has a raised stone surface, so its finished thickness and piece weight should not be confused with those of a flat veneer sheet.

LumiSlate and exterior cladding panels are more complete systems. LumiSlate includes lighting components; exterior cladding combines stone with an aluminium-backed panel and fixing arrangement. Quoting only the thickness or weight of their stone surface would leave out much of the installed product. You can read more about the two systems in our LumiSlate overview and exterior cladding overview.

What to confirm before specifying

Before selecting a finish or preparing drawings, confirm:

  • whether the dimensions refer to the uncut sheet, a decorative piece or a complete panel;

  • whether the stated thickness and weight include the backing and other components;

  • the proposed substrate, fixing method and installation environment;

  • any custom cutting, edge details and joint layout required by the design.

The most reliable specification is for the exact product configuration being ordered, not a general figure applied to the whole range.
