NALEXIBLE ultra-thin natural stone veneer combines a real stone surface with a reinforced backing, making it lighter and easier to handle than conventional stone slabs.
Correct preparation remains essential. The substrate must be flat, firm, clean and dry, and the adhesive must suit both the stone backing and the installation surface.
This guide explains the standard installation process for opaque NALEXIBLE ultra-thin natural stone veneer. Translucent stone and exterior cladding systems require different installation details.
Suitable Substrates
Depending on the project and adhesive system, ultra-thin natural stone veneer may be installed over suitable:
-
Timber
-
Cement board
-
Metal panels
-
Plastic panels
-
Glass
-
Acrylic
-
Honeycomb panels
-
Existing ceramic tiles
The surface must remain stable and free from movement, loose coatings, dust, oil and moisture. Always confirm that the selected adhesive is compatible with the substrate and intended environment.
Installation Conditions
Before installation, check the following conditions:
Flatness
Inspect the surface visually and with a level. Repair uneven areas before installing the stone.
Firmness
The substrate must be solid. Repair surfaces that show peeling, powdering, movement or poor adhesion.
Cleanliness
Remove dust, debris, oil and other contaminants. Dust can significantly reduce adhesive performance.
Temperature
The installation guide recommends an ambient temperature above 10°C. If the material becomes stiff in cold conditions, warm it carefully before shaping or installation.
Tools and Materials
Prepare the required tools before starting:
-
Measuring tape
-
Pencil and straightedge
-
Fine-tooth woodworking saw
-
Circular saw with a 2mm diamond blade
-
Metal shears where suitable
-
Planer
-
600-grit sandpaper
-
Notched scraper
-
Pressure roller
-
Masking tape
-
Suitable structural adhesive
-
Surface protector where specified
-
Safety glasses, gloves and a dust mask
Cutting natural stone veneer can produce dust. Wear suitable personal protective equipment and work in a properly ventilated area.
Step 1: Check the Material
Before cutting or installation:
-
Confirm the product, colour, quantity and dimensions.
-
Inspect every sheet for transport damage.
-
Review the natural colour and veining variation.
-
Plan the layout before applying adhesive.
-
Check the site measurements against the project drawings.
Natural stone varies from sheet to sheet. Arrange the sheets before installation to achieve the preferred visual flow.
Step 2: Measure and Plan the Layout
Measure the installation area and mark the required dimensions on the stone.
Dry-fit the sheets where possible. Check edges, corners, openings and joints before cutting. Planning the full layout helps reduce unnecessary cuts and material waste.
Step 3: Cut the Stone Veneer
Place the sheet with the finished stone surface facing upward.
Cut slowly and consistently using a suitable tool. Avoid operating the cutting equipment at excessive speed, as this may cause surface damage or blade deviation.
Depending on the cut and required accuracy, suitable tools may include:
-
A circular saw with a 2mm diamond blade
-
A fine-tooth woodworking saw
-
Metal shears for suitable details
After cutting, smooth the edge with a planer or fine sandpaper. Remove loose fragments carefully without damaging the stone surface.
Step 4: Prepare the Adhesive
For standard opaque ultra-thin stone, use a compatible structural adhesive suitable for the substrate and installation environment.
Apply the adhesive to the back of the sheet in a grid pattern, with approximately 6–8cm spacing as specified in the NALEXIBLE installation guide.
Keep adhesive away from the outer edge of the sheet to reduce the risk of adhesive overflowing when pressure is applied.
Translucent natural stone requires a transparent crystal adhesive and a separate lighting and substrate system.
Step 5: Position the Sheet
Carefully place the sheet against the prepared surface.
Check its position before applying full pressure. Align the sheet with adjoining pieces and confirm that the joints follow the planned layout.
Step 6: Apply Even Pressure
Use a pressure roller across the stone surface to create close contact between the backing, adhesive and substrate.
Apply pressure evenly across the full sheet, paying particular attention to edges and corners. Avoid trapping gaps behind the material.
Step 7: Finish the Joints
Where the design includes visible joints:
-
Apply masking tape along both sides of the joint.
-
Press the sheets securely with the roller.
-
Fill the joint with a compatible sealant where required.
-
Remove the masking tape according to the sealant instructions.
Masking the stone edges helps prevent contamination of the natural surface.
Step 8: Protect and Clean the Surface
Remove installation residue before it dries. Apply the specified surface protector when required by the product and application.
For routine maintenance:
-
Remove dust with a soft dry cloth or feather duster.
-
Use a slightly damp, lint-free cloth for more thorough cleaning.
-
Avoid unsuitable conventional cleaners and unapproved sealers.
-
Avoid prolonged contact with oil and chemicals.
-
Protect the surface from sharp objects.
Follow the maintenance instructions supplied for the selected product and project environment.
Common Installation Mistakes
Avoid these common problems:
-
Installing over an uneven or unstable substrate
-
Applying adhesive to a dusty surface
-
Cutting at excessive speed
-
Cutting with the finished surface facing downward
-
Applying adhesive too close to the sheet edge
-
Failing to plan the natural stone pattern before installation
-
Failing to apply pressure across the complete sheet
-
Grouting or sealing joints without masking the stone edges
-
Using an adhesive that is incompatible with the backing or substrate
Can Ultra-Thin Natural Stone Veneer Be Installed Outdoors?
Selected NALEXIBLE products can be used in exterior applications when the substrate, adhesive, waterproofing, sealing and installation method suit the project conditions.
Exterior installations should account for moisture, temperature changes, substrate movement and local building requirements. Contact NALEXIBLE before specifying the standard veneer for an exterior project.
For projects requiring a supported façade system, consider the NALEXIBLE Exterior Stone Cladding Panel series.
Can It Be Installed on Curved Surfaces?
The reinforced backing allows ultra-thin natural stone veneer to conform to many curved architectural surfaces.
The achievable radius depends on the stone, sheet construction and project conditions. Test the selected product before installation and avoid forcing a cold or stiff sheet into a tight curve.
Does Translucent Stone Use the Same Installation Method?
No. Translucent natural stone normally requires:
-
A transparent adhesive
-
A glass or acrylic substrate
-
A planned LED lighting system
-
Adequate distance between the light source and stone
-
Access for future lighting maintenance
Refer to the dedicated translucent natural stone installation guide for lighting distances and substrate recommendations.
